Plaque installed in memory of flood victims

A MEMORIAL to flood victims Bram and Chris Lane has been installed at Tewkesbury Rugby Club.

Two large stones have been put at the entrance of the Gander Lane club to the father and son, who died while clearing floodwater at the club in July 2007. A plaque has also been put up in their memory.

Club chairman Bryan Parsons said the stones represented Bram and Chris so that they would always have a presence and would not be forgotten.

He said: "The club wanted to do something to remember Bram and Chris, one year on, that was long-lasting. In 10 or 20 years time there will be people using the club who never knew them."

"But when they come into the club they will see the memorial and will be reminded of them."

The stones have been placed near saplings planted earlier this year in memory of Bram, 64, and his 27-year-old son Chris.

One of them was obtained from a quarry near Tewkesbury and the other from the Forest of Dean.

Club officials are keeping their fingers crossed that the stones will not be attacked by vandals in the way the trees were in April.

Friends from Severn Trent Water, for whom Chris worked, planted two mature cherry trees either side of the entrance and a number of saplings nearby.

The vandals left the cherry trees alone, but the saplings were torn up and snapped. The yobs also smashed five advertising boards around the pitch.

It is thought Bram and Chris died after being overcome by fumes from a pump.

Bram was known as Mr Rugby in the town, was the club's treasurer and did various odd jobs at the Gander Lane site.
